Bucharest airport to city centre: train, bus, taxi or rental car?

Updated: October 9, 2026 · Vrenty Car

Getting from Bucharest airport to the city centre is not the same decision as choosing a car for the whole holiday. A train or bus may suit two nights in the capital; a rental can make more sense when your journey continues beyond it. This Vrenty Car guide compares the complete trip to your accommodation, not just the airport leg. It covers Henri Coanda Airport in Otopeni, code OTP. If your ticket says BBU, use the separate Bucharest airport comparison first.

Choose for your destination, not the word centre

Start with the address where you will actually sleep. A hotel near a convenient transport stop creates a different journey from an apartment reached through narrow streets with heavy luggage. Pin the entrance, check reception hours and ask how guests usually arrive. The cheapest airport ticket is not necessarily the simplest complete transfer, but an expensive vehicle is not automatically necessary either.

Use the comparison below to shortlist an option. Then check its remaining steps: walking to the stop, waiting, boarding, reaching the hotel and handling bags. If you are considering a rental, include the handover and parking. Do not compare a train's running time with a car's door-to-door estimate as if both start immediately after landing.

Airport train: Gara de Nord is the endpoint, not your hotel

The airport's official rail information describes a connection to Bucharest North Station, Gara de Nord, running around the clock at published intervals of 40 minutes. CFR describes the rail journey as approximately 20-25 minutes. That figure excludes baggage collection, the walk, waiting and onward travel. During the current parking works, follow signs from the ground floor of Arrivals to the railway station.

Read the CFR route and ticket information and check the actual departure for your date. Payment channels and charges depend on the operator and how you buy. Buying from a conductor can have different conditions from buying before boarding; do not treat an old fare screenshot or another operator's ticket as valid for every train.

Before selecting rail, map the remaining journey from Gara de Nord. Compare the effort of another connection with a direct transfer, especially with several bags. For an onward mainline train, leave room for flight and luggage delays rather than building an itinerary around the shortest possible interchange. Keep the station name available offline so that a weak connection does not interrupt navigation.

Bus 100: check the temporary Departures stop

The airport's current bus page identifies line 100 as a city-centre connection, with published intervals of 15 minutes by day and 30 minutes at night. Crucially, its works notice says lines 100 and 442 currently stop only at Departures, not at Arrivals. Follow current airport directions rather than the waiting place shown in an older guide.

Open the route and timetable linked by the airport and find the stop that suits your hotel. A stop named after a central landmark may still leave a walk through unfamiliar streets. Check the direction, not merely the route number. For the return, identify the correct boarding side instead of assuming it is exactly where you got off.

Allow for road traffic and boarding with luggage. Have the chosen payment method ready and check the current ticket conditions before travelling. If a connection requires another service, establish whether that leg is covered rather than assuming all transport uses one ticket. The bus can be a practical choice when its route matches the trip; flexibility matters more than a promise of a fixed arrival minute.

Taxi and ride-hailing: match the car and the meeting point

Use the airport's taxi and ridesharing guidance rather than accepting an unsolicited approach. Its taxi-order terminals issue a ticket identifying the vehicle; retain it and board the matching car. For app-based rides, check the vehicle, driver and pickup instructions in the app. The current airport guidance moves ridesharing pickup to Departures during works, so taxi and app meeting points should not be assumed identical.

Enter the accommodation's actual entrance as the destination where possible. Ask the property about pedestrian streets or controlled access before ordering. A journey to a nearby drop-off may still require carrying luggage. Confirm passenger and bag capacity, particularly when a vehicle category describes seats but does not explain space for several large cases.

Compare the displayed terms, payment method and any agreed waiting arrangement. A prebooked transfer is a separate service with its own delay policy; it is not guaranteed by choosing a hotel or viewing a rental website. Keep the trip record and receipt. There is no fixed taxi or app fare in this guide because the charge and availability must be checked for the actual service.

Solve the last kilometre before you leave the terminal

The final approach can change your choice more than the airport connection. Save the building number, entrance photograph supplied by the host and a usable contact method. Ask whether the reception address differs from the apartment address. For a late check-in, obtain the instructions in advance; arriving at a correct street is not enough if keys are collected elsewhere.

For public transport, inspect the walking route with luggage in mind. Consider crossings, weather and whether everyone can manage the distance comfortably. A route that looks short on a map may involve a less convenient entrance. If the last leg is unsuitable, compare an onward taxi with a direct airport transfer instead of automatically abandoning rail.

For driving, ask for the parking entrance separately from the hotel entrance. Confirm availability and any reservation requirement; a property photograph does not establish that a space is included. The Bucharest driving and parking guide helps you prepare for the city portion. Avoid stopping in an unsuitable place simply because navigation announces that you have arrived.

Rent at OTP or collect after your city stay?

Airport collection can be useful when the car starts working for you immediately: accommodation outside the centre, visits to several addresses or a road trip after arrival. It avoids arranging another collection later. However, you must allow for the supplier's meeting process, paperwork and inspection before driving. An airport arrival does not guarantee a terminal desk or an immediate handover.

For two city-focused nights followed by a road trip, compare transferring to the hotel first and renting when the driving begins. This can avoid unused rental days and overnight parking, but only if later collection is practical. A city pickup or hotel delivery must appear in the offer or be confirmed by the supplier, including any fee. Do not book an airport service and assume its location can be changed informally.

Compare Bucharest car rental for the dates you really need. Then read the Otopeni airport collection guide for the handover itself. A useful booking supports your itinerary rather than forcing you to drive solely to justify the rental. Vrenty Car is an independent affiliate guide; the selected Localrent supplier provides the car and confirms collection arrangements.

Compare the whole trip budget, including parked days

Make two short budgets using the same itinerary. For a transfer-first plan, include airport travel for every passenger, any last-mile journey, later rental collection and the eventual airport return. For an airport-rental plan, include the total rental, confirmed extras, fuel, parking and any delivery or out-of-hours charge. A refundable deposit is not the rental price, but it still affects funds available during the trip.

Do not multiply a headline daily rate without checking how the supplier prices your actual times. Compare like-for-like vehicle capacity, transmission and conditions. The most convenient option can change when there are several travellers, but no group size guarantees that renting is cheaper. Use current quotes and explain the tradeoff to everyone who will share the journey.

Read the Romania rental terms and the individual offer before paying. Localrent identifies fuel, parking, fines and toll roads as renter responsibilities. Card and driver requirements are offer-specific. Keep the remaining balance and any deposit separate in your notes so that successful online payment is not mistaken for satisfying every collection requirement.

Families, larger bags and access needs change the calculation

Count luggage as well as people before choosing transport. Include a pushchair, mobility equipment or sporting bags that may not fit the usual suitcase assumption. Ask a booked vehicle provider about usable space and assistance, not simply the advertised number of seats. For public transport, check how the group will manage boarding and the onward walk without relying on strangers to lift equipment.

If children require suitable seats, confirm the arrangement for each vehicle journey, including a rental shuttle if one is used. A child seat requested for the rental car does not automatically cover a separate transfer. Tell the supplier what is needed before travel. Keep essential items in a small bag and leave payment documents accessible rather than buried under luggage.

Late arrivals and delays need a backup, not a faster estimate

Use the time you expect to leave Arrivals, not the scheduled touchdown, when checking a departure or meeting. Recheck the date when a late flight crosses midnight. Published overnight transport does not guarantee that the next connection or reception remains available. Save an alternative that still reaches your accommodation if luggage takes longer or the first plan becomes impractical.

For a booked transfer or rental, send changes through the verified contact in the confirmation and request acknowledgement. Adding a flight number is not proof of unlimited waiting. Ask how a revised appointment affects the booking; do not invent a grace period. For an unbooked journey, compare available options after you have bags and know where to meet.

If you are tired after flying, a transfer and later collection can be preferable to beginning unfamiliar driving immediately. Build flexibility into the first evening. A delayed arrival is a reason to reassess the itinerary, not to speed or compress a vehicle inspection.

Plan the city-to-airport return separately

Work backwards from your airline's required terminal arrival. For rail, include travel to Gara de Nord, the chosen departure and the walk at OTP. For a bus or car, leave contingency for the day's road conditions. Do not reverse the fastest inbound estimate and assume it is a reliable departure plan.

A rental return may happen at an off-airport location with a subsequent shuttle. Confirm the entrance, inspection procedure, fuel arrangement and transfer timing before the final day. The booking should end at the agreed handover time, not the moment you intend to reach check-in. Keep return instructions separate from the saved arrival meeting point.

Check the airport code again: an OTP arrival and a BBU departure require different arrangements. Before travel, review the airport's current access notices and keep a backup contact. Temporary works can change where you board even when the transport service continues running.

A practical arrival plan you can save offline

Write one note with the airport code, hotel entrance, chosen transport, current meeting or boarding location and backup option. Include the next step after reaching a station or stop. Share it with a travelling companion, but omit card security details and unnecessary identity-document copies. Once you are stationary with luggage collected, confirm that the plan still fits your situation.

If the car is mainly for a later excursion, decide its collection timing alongside the trip rather than renting by habit. For example, the Therme Bucharest driving guide helps you think through an out-of-centre visit separately from central sightseeing. Check the destination and offer before combining activities. A good transfer decision leaves you free to enjoy the first day and collect a suitable car when it is genuinely useful.

Questions & answers

Does the OTP train take me directly to the Old Town?

No. The airport rail connection ends at Gara de Nord. Plan the onward journey to your accommodation separately. The published rail running time is not a complete hotel transfer time.

Where is the airport bus stop during the works?

The airport bus page checked on 9 October 2026 says lines 100 and 442 stop only at Departures while the works continue. Follow updated airport signs and check the official page before travelling; do not rely on an old Arrivals-stop photograph.

Is renting a car worthwhile for a city-only weekend?

Not automatically. Compare your actual journeys with public transport or a transfer, and include parking and unused rental time. A rental becomes a stronger option when it also serves destinations beyond the centre. The best answer depends on your accommodation and itinerary.

Can I transfer into town and rent a car later?

Yes, if you book an available collection arrangement for the later date and location. Check the offer and obtain confirmation for city pickup or delivery rather than assuming an airport booking includes it. Include the effort and cost of reaching that collection point.

Is a taxi, rental representative or app driver met in the same place?

Do not assume so. Each service has its own directions. Use the airport's taxi guidance, the app's current map or the rental supplier's confirmed instructions as appropriate. Current works notices distinguish taxi and ridesharing arrangements.
